"Il 2015 è stato, letteralmente, un anno storico per Château Margaux. Abbiamo festeggiato il bicentenario degli edifici della Tenuta, risalenti al 1815, e l'inaugurazione delle nuove strutture, progettate o riorganizzate, da Norman Foster. È facile immaginare quanto abbiamo sognato che il 2015 sarebbe stata una grande annata!
Senza dubbio parte del risultato è dovuto a decisioni prese al momento del blending; solo il 35% del raccolto è andato al primo vino, record di severità per un'annata di questo livello. Come di consueto, è stato il Cabernet Sauvignon al primo posto con l'87% dell'uvaggio; oltre alla sua concentrazione e finezza, quest'anno ha un vigore e una forza insoliti. Il Merlot non ha nulla di cui vergognarsi, almeno nelle grandi trame; costituisce l'8% del primo vino. Anche Cabernet Franc (3%) e Petit Verdot (2%) trovano il loro posto in questo blend selezionato, che conferma che le grandi annate permettono a tutti i diversi vitigni di esprimere il proprio carattere.
Come possiamo confrontare il 2015 con i suoi predecessori? È un compito ingrato, e un po' futile, soprattutto per le grandi annate. Ci sono, ovviamente, somiglianze, affinità e anche alcune differenze dove non ci aspettiamo di trovarle... Ma possiamo evocare una combinazione della forza del 2005, della carne del 2009, della sottigliezza del 2010 e del fascino inimitabile di Castello Margaux.
Una testimonianza dell'ultima vendemmia di Paul Pontallier; un vino che racchiude tutte le più belle qualità di Château Margaux.
Per tutti questi motivi, Château Margaux ha voluto creare un packaging speciale per il Grand Vin 2015.
È stato disegnato un astuccio unico, impreziosito da una magnifica serigrafia, creata appositamente per questa annata, apposta sul vetro al posto della tradizionale etichetta. Il vintage, come la sua bottiglia unica, sembra essere stato costruito per l'eternità. (ottobre 2018)
Clima
L'inverno, sensibilmente più freddo di quelli degli anni precedenti, ha provocato una fioritura tardiva, ma perfettamente regolare. Il tempo secco e soleggiato in primavera ha creato condizioni ottimali, quindi la fioritura è avvenuta molto rapidamente e in modo omogeneo. Questo clima caldo e secco si è protratto per tutti i mesi di giugno e luglio, al punto che si temeva potesse esserci uno stress idrico, almeno negli appezzamenti più sensibili. Per fortuna un po' di pioggia nel mese di agosto è arrivata giusto in tempo per garantire un rapido e regolare cambio di colore. La siccità, tornata a settembre, unita a giornate molto calde e notti fresche, ha permesso alle uve di bilanciare la ricchezza zuccherina con una buona acidità, di rendere più setosi i tannini e di rendere più complesso il potenziale aromatico.
La vendemmia dei rossi è avvenuta dal 18 settembre al 6 ottobre. La piccola dimensione degli acini e le loro bucce più spesse indicavano un'altissima concentrazione di tannini. Le condizioni climatiche del 2015 sono, infatti, la caratteristica di annate molto belle, come il 2005, il 2009 e il 2010."

"The 2010 is a brilliant Chateau Margaux, as one might expect in this vintage. The percentage of Cabernet Sauvignon in the final blend hit 90%, the balance Merlot and Cabernet Franc, and only 38% of the crop made it into the Chateau Margaux. Paul Pontallier, the administrator, told me that this wine has even higher levels of tannin than some other extraordinary vintages such as 2005, 2000, 1996, etc. Deep purple, pure and intense, with floral notes, tremendous opulence and palate presence, this is a wine of considerable nobility. With loads of blueberry, black currant and violet-infused fruit and a heady alcohol level above 13.5% (although that looks modest compared to several other first growths, particularly Chateau Latour and Chateau Haut-Brion), its beautifully sweet texture, ripe tannin, abundant depth and profound finish all make for another near-perfect wine that should age effortlessly for 30-40 years."

"This is a haunting young wine that shows you a subtle and hidden strength on the nose with rose petals, currants, currant leaves, stones and plums. Wonderful ripeness yet brightness, too. Takes your breath away with the intensity and structure. Full-bodied, powerful and muscular, yet there's an agile undertone to the whole thing. Compact and condensed. A new legend for Margaux. The 1961 that didn’t happen. Try in 2024."

"The grand vin is the 2015 Château Margaux and it’s as good a wine as I’ve ever tasted. Coming from just over one-third of the total production and a blend of 87% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc and the balance Petit Verdot, brought up in 100% new French oak, its deep ruby/purple-tinged color is followed by a thrilling bouquet of crème de cassis, toasted spice, hints of toasty oak, and cedar wood. Incredibly elegant and finesse-driven, yet packed with fruit, depth, richness, and structure, it has as much class as you can fit inside a glass. While the vintage provides plenty of upfront charm, this is a wine to cellar for at least a decade, and enjoy over the following 40+ years. 2026 - 2066"

"Chateau Margaux 2015 has a blend of 87% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc, and 2% Petit Verdot and is deep garnet in color. It is very closed and shy to begin, eventually opening out to beautiful warm cassis, black raspberries, and notes of dried mulberries, followed by hints of tobacco leaf, crushed rocks, and dried lavender, with a touch of Ceylon tea. The medium to full-bodied palate is rich and seductive, featuring grainy tannins and bright, bold acidity, finishing epically long and layered. The tannins are just a touch "al dente" compared with the 2016, but this is nonetheless gorgeous. This vintage is packaged in a beautiful commemorative bottle honoring winemaker Paul Pontellier, who passed away in 2016. The gold-etched black bottle bears the message, “Hommage à Paul Pontellier” at the bottom. This 2015 is an evocative swan song from a gifted winemaker, taken from us too soon."
