History and character
Château Ausone is one of the oldest and most prestigious estates in Saint-Émilion. According to tradition, it takes its name from the Roman poet Ausonius.
Saint-Émilion, on the right bank of the Dordogne, is one of Bordeaux's most famous appellations. Its medieval village and vineyards are a UNESCO World Heritage site, and its wines are made primarily from Merlot and Cabernet Franc.
The Saint-Émilion classification, established in 1955 and periodically reviewed, distinguishes Premier Grand Cru Classé and Grand Cru Classé. Level A is the highest in the Saint-Émilion classification.
