Collection: Quinta do Val Moreira
Located on the south bank of the Douro River, in Cima-Corgo, Quinta do Val Moreira was acquired by Jorge Rebelo de Almeida and António Parente in 2018. These two long-time friends, already producing wines in the Alentejo and Lisbon regions, developed a project that respects the culture of the Douro. Their ambition is for the Val Moreira bottle to offer a balance between the structural strength of the grapes grown in the vineyard and the freshness of the wine produced from high-quality vines. This is one of the oldest demarcated regions in wine history, dating back over 250 years. It is located in the northeast of Portugal and stretches along the Douro River valley.
It has 23 hectares dedicated to the production of Douro wines, 2 hectares of olive groves and 2 hectares of peanuts. It offers a fantastic view of the valley, where the Douro River and the Tedo River are the main protagonists.
Quinta do Val Moreira appears on an old 19th-century map, the map of Baron Forrester. A key figure in the Douro wine region, he dreamed of making the Douro River navigable and safe as far as the border with Spain. This map earned him a reputation as a cartographer and the title of Baron.
Today, the farm is located on the north side of Marmelal, a very old village, whose charter from D. Sancho I dates back to 1194. This royal document included our main vineyards and land facing Tedo and the Quintas de Nápoles and do Carril.
Part of our vineyards are located in another tributary valley of the Douro River, which featured one of the largest watercourses between Marmelal and Folgosa. These vineyards are adjacent to the ruins of the old "Quinta de Valmor" house, which is said to have belonged to the Viscount of Valmor, who was awarded the prestigious Lisbon and Portugal prize in the field of architecture.
Two Pombaline landmarks are located in the area, one of which is near the small village of Marmelal, Quinta do Val Moreira, and the Carril stream. These granite monuments are classified as properties of public interest. Built by the Marquis of Pombal in 1757, they served to demarcate the fortified wine region of the Douro, under the jurisdiction of the General Company of Agriculture of the Douro Vineyards. This is how the first demarcated wine region in the world was born, a historical fact of which the population of Rio Grande do Sul is very proud.
