Château La Cardonne
2016
Médoc - Cru Bourgeois
75cl
50% Merlot, 45% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Cabernet Franc
Château La Cardonne 2016 is a red wine from the Médoc appellation in the Bordeaux region, classified as Cru Bourgeois. It is made from a typical Left Bank blend, consisting mainly of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, with a small percentage of Cabernet Franc. The 2016 vintage is considered one of the best in recent years in Bordeaux, thanks to ideal climatic conditions that favored complete ripeness, aromatic concentration, and tannic balance.
The wine presents an intense and deep ruby red color. On the nose, it expresses aromas of ripe black fruits such as blackberry and blackcurrant, accompanied by spicy notes, subtle hints of vanilla, and well-integrated oak derived from aging in barriques. On the palate, it is structured yet harmonious, with elegant and well-polished tannins, good freshness, and a long, persistent finish that recalls dark fruit and sweet spices.
It is a wine that can be enjoyed now, but it also has good potential for evolution in the bottle for several years. It pairs perfectly with red meats, roasts, game, and aged cheeses, best expressing the classicism and elegance of great Médoc reds.
History
Château La Cardonne is a historic Médoc estate, already present on the first maps of France drawn by Cassini in 1769. Located on the highest point of the Médoc plateau, the property extends over 45 hectares of gently sloping vineyards, exposed to Atlantic winds and influenced by the Gironde estuary.
The vineyard is distinguished by a remarkable variety of soils: gravels over clay on the plateau and, along the slopes, parcels of clay-limestone over blue marl with limestone outcrops. This diversity allows for separate vinification of each parcel, to best express the specific characteristics of each terroir.
According to legend, the wine was among Napoleon III's favorites, but it was not included in the 1855 classification due to its distance from Bordeaux. Today, Château La Cardonne is recognized among the elite of the Cru Bourgeois Exceptionnel.
The estate's reputation was also solidified during its time with Domaines Barons de Lafite-Rothschild, whose contribution was crucial for the wine's international recognition. After the acquisition in 1990, Éric Fabre, former technical director of Lafite and architect of the vineyard's restructuring in the 1980s, continued to guide its development, making it one of Bordeaux's most modern realities.
In 2000, Magali Guyon, formerly winemaker at Château Lynch-Bages, took over and for more than twenty years defined the wine's style. From 2026, Sébastien Vergne, from Château Margaux, will take over the direction, confirming the estate's tradition of attracting great oenological talents.
