Notes on the 2005 vintage

"2005 will be remembered as the year of drought. In fact, the water deficit has been particularly constant: with the harvest approaching, the cumulative rainfall is less than half the average for the last 30 years. Once again, our clayey subsoils will play an important role. The temperatures were instead remarkably favourable, particularly in the summer period with a perfect alternation of hot days and cool nights, guaranteeing excellent ripening of the grapes.
Without having the glamorous and opulent character of the 2003, the 2005 impresses with exceptional power, the purity of the fruit and the extraordinary elegance it exudes.
Great classic vintage without any austerity but typically Bordeaux.

Harvest date: 23 September – 9 October
Blend: Cabernet Sauvignon: 65%, Merlot: 31%, Cabernet Franc: 3.5%, Petit Verdot: 0.5%

Tasting comments
Color: dense, purple, almost black. Complex and closed nose still today: black fruits, spices, chocolate. Complex, long, broad, powerful, homogeneous palate: cherry, cocoa, licorice, brown tobacco, plum. Very large, full and very structured wine.
Nice length, with clean and very straight tannins. Great aging potential."

Reviews

Wine Advocate : 98
"The 2005 Montrose continues to show brilliantly, unwinding in the glass with notes of blackcurrant, red fruits, loamy soil, black truffles and cigar ash. Full-bodied, deep and concentrated, it's still brooding and tannic, with lively acids and an imposing chassis of structuring—and artery-cleansing—extract. Still an adolescent, it's one of the last unexpectedly old-school vintages of Montrose, and Médoc purists couldn't own enough. While this remains a very youthful wine, it is now apparent that the 2005 will, at maturity, surpass the 1989 and 1990." William Kelley, Wine Advocate (259), February 2022

Lisa Perrotti-Brown MW : 97+
"The 2005 Montrose is a blend of 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 31% Merlot, 3.5% Cabernet Franc, and 0.5% Petit Verdot. Deep garnet-brick in colour, it is quite sluggish and broody on the nose to start, eventually giving way to fragrant red and black currant preserves, stewed black plums, and blackberry jam notes, followed by nuances of potpourri, fragrant soil, crushed rocks, and pencil lead.Medium-bodied, the palate remains very tightly wound, featuring firm, super-ripe tannins and a lively backbone, finishing long and minerally.Give this Montrose a good five more years in bottle, at least, and drink it over the next 25 years+." The Wine Independent, July 2022

Jancis RobinsonMW : 18/20
"Tasted blind. Sweet, luscious nose. Lots of raciness and grace. Masses of tannin buried under really rather fine fruit. Dry but not drying finish. Pretty sophisticated.

Jane Anson : 98
"The last year for Montrose under the Charmolüe family, before the Bouygues bought in 2006. Inky plum in colour, moreish from the very first sip. So juicy, such well controlled extraction, balanced but intense and concentrated, with layers of still-vibrant cassis, bilberry, eucalyptus and cocoa bean. You can now clearly see where this is heading, but it will continue to build over the next few years, and then stay on the plateau for decades. Proof that whatever the Bouygues paid for it the following year, they were getting one of the greatest estates in the Médoc. 60% new oak." Jane Anson, JaneAnson.com, September 2022
